Latin America is currently facing a significant cyber security crisis, with around 1,600 cyber attacks occurring every seconds and 90% of companies reporting incidents last year. The World Economic Forum's Global Risk Report 2024 has ranked cyber security is a critical global concern. To effectively tackle this issue the region, the region must not only enhance its cybersecurity infrastructure, but also foster a secure digital culture that prioritize digital literacy.
As connectivity grows, it is imperative for the region to prioritize investment in digital literacy. This will ensure that as connectivity expands, cyber threats do not escalate.
This involves creating a collaborative environment where governments, private sectors and individuals work together to improve connectivity and security. Digital literacy plays a crucial role in enabling individuals to recognize and respond to cyber threats. As ecommerce and digital services expand, citizens must develop the skills to navigate these platforms securely, with countries like Peru leading initiatives to advance digital talent.
However, cyber security cannot be addressed in his isolation. The transnational nature of cyber crime necessitates regional cooperation. By sharing knowledge and resources, Latin America can strengthen its digital economy. While mitigating cyber security risks, enhancing digital literacy and collaboration will empower citizen, ensuring that as connectivity grows, the region is better equipped to handle cyber threats.
