the year so far
It’s been a busy few months here at CCLATAM, so why don’t we do a bit of catch-up? You might’ve read in our newsletter El CC, that we’ve been moving quite a bit throughout the globe so far. Here’s a short rundown of what we’ve been up to.
First, in February we had our first big summit alongside CERTAL in Madrid, called “Connecting Communities: Perspectives and Challenges of Digitalization”. That took place a week before the all-encompassing MWC Barcelona 2024.
In Madrid we heard from such esteemed speakers as Roberto Nobile, CEO of Telecom Argentina; Adina-Iona Valean, the European Commissioner for Transport; César Martín, the Ecuadorean Minister of Telecommunications and Information; Colombian Senator Alfredo Deluque; Gustavo Villate, the Paraguayan Minister of Information and Communication, and so many more.
And we’re very proud that even many of our own board members were not only present but acting as speakers and moderators, like Jorge Negrete, the President of the Digital Policy & Law, who enlightened us with a one-on-one talk with Carlos Lopez Blanco, an expert in digital economy and telecommunications regulation. Effortlessly weaving history, geopolitics, and the future of our region in a conversation that could’ve extended for two days, and no one would’ve complained. Or Ángel Melguizo, who closed the summit participating in a panel on AI and the ways to integrate it into our society without losing our “spark” in the process. Also hosting the event was our own editor, Ian Garrahan. Closing off Madrid was Duke University’s David Hoffman, who not only gave a poignant keynote speech on Cybersecurity, but also a two-day masterclass on cybersecurity, threat assessment and strategical outlook.

And that’s not all, Karim Lesina and Piero Bonadeo, two of our co-founders, took to the stage to both moderate and participate in the panels. Our president Piero, moderated a panel on new crimes and cybersecurity, and Karim opened the summit alongside representatives from the Argentinean Embassy, Telecom Argentina and executives from CERTAL.
Then it was off to Barcelona, where on the night of the first day of MWC24, we had our second event, in which we got the very special opportunity to hear straight from Paraguay’s President, Santiago Peña, who’s in the midst of turning the South American nation into a hub for technological development and entrepreneurship. “…what I’ve learned is that digital transformation has nothing to do with technology and has everything to do with the habits that we create, and how we connect with other people and the relation between government and the citizen in general.”, said Peña, in what was an absolute treat of an interaction opportunity.

Hearing a head of state articulate so deftly not only his views, but the path going forward that he intends to take his nation in was an absolute pleasure. The discussion was once again guided by Jorge Negrete’s skilled oratory, and greatly powered by the venue, that great law firm Uría Menéndez graciously allowed us to use.

Then it was across the ocean to Costa Rica for the next event, where our board member David Hoffman took Duke University’s Cybersecurity Leadership Program to train members of the Universidad Latina de Costa Rica in identifying and preparing responses to cyberattacks, in a three-day event that merged law, policy and technology into actionable responses that participants got to act-out as part of the training.

El año hasta ahora
Han sido unos meses ocupados aquí en CCLATAM, ¿por qué no ponernos al día un poco? Es posible que hayan leído en nuestro boletín informativo El CC, que nos hemos estado moviendo bastante por todo el mundo hasta ahora. Aquí tienen un resumen breve de lo que hemos estado haciendo.
Primero, en febrero tuvimos nuestra primera gran cumbre junto a CERTAL en Madrid, llamada "Conectando Comunidades: Perspectivas y Desafíos de la Digitalización". Eso tuvo lugar una semana antes del todo incluyente MWC Barcelona 2024.
En Madrid, escuchamos a oradores tan estimados como Roberto Nobile, CEO de Telecom Argentina; Adina-Iona Valean, la Comisaria Europea de Transportes; César Martín, el Ministro Ecuatoriano de Telecomunicaciones e Información; el Senador Colombiano Alfredo Deluque; Gustavo Villate, el Ministro Paraguayo de Información y Comunicación, y muchos más.
Y estamos muy orgullosos de que incluso muchos de nuestros propios miembros del consejo no solo estuvieron presentes sino que también actuaron como oradores y moderadores, como Jorge Negrete, el Presidente de la Política Digital y el Derecho, quien nos iluminó con una charla uno a uno con Carlos López Blanco, un experto en economía digital y regulación de telecomunicaciones. Entrelazando sin esfuerzo historia, geopolítica y el futuro de nuestra región en una conversación que podría haberse extendido durante dos días, y nadie se habría quejado. O Ángel Melguizo, quien cerró la cumbre participando en un panel sobre inteligencia artificial y las formas de integrarla en nuestra sociedad sin perder nuestra "chispa" en el proceso. También presentando el evento estaba nuestro propio editor, Ian Garrahan. Cerrando Madrid estaba David Hoffman de la Universidad de Duke, quien no solo dio un discurso principal conmovedor sobre Ciberseguridad, sino también una clase magistral de dos días sobre ciberseguridad, evaluación de amenazas y perspectivas estratégicas.
Y eso no es todo, Karim Lesina y Piero Bonadeo, dos de nuestros cofundadores, subieron al escenario tanto para moderar como para participar en los paneles. Nuestro presidente Piero, moderó un panel sobre nuevos delitos y ciberseguridad, y Karim abrió la cumbre junto a representantes de la Embajada Argentina, Telecom Argentina y ejecutivos de CERTAL.
Luego nos dirigimos a Barcelona, donde en la noche del primer día de MWC24, tuvimos nuestro segundo evento, en el que tuvimos la oportunidad muy especial de escuchar directamente al Presidente de Paraguay, Santiago Peña, quien está en medio de convertir a la nación sudamericana en un centro de desarrollo tecnológico y empresarial. "... lo que he aprendido es que la transformación digital no tiene nada que ver con la tecnología y tiene todo que ver con los hábitos que creamos, y cómo nos conectamos con otras personas y la relación entre el gobierno y el ciudadano en general.", dijo Peña, en lo que fue un verdadero placer de una oportunidad de interacción.
Escuchar a un jefe de estado articular tan hábilmente no solo sus puntos de vista, sino también el camino a seguir que él pretende para su nación fue un auténtico gusto. La discusión fue una vez más guiada por la hábil oratoria de Jorge Negrete, y fue muy potenciada por el lugar, que el gran estudio de abogados Uría Menéndez nos permitió usar generosamente.
Luego fue al otro lado del océano a Costa Rica para el próximo evento, donde nuestro miembro del consejo David Hoffman llevó el Programa de Liderazgo en Ciberseguridad de la Universidad de Duke para capacitar a miembros de la Universidad Latina de Costa Rica en identificar y preparar respuestas a ciberataques, en un evento de tres días que fusionó derecho, política y tecnología en respuestas accionables que los participantes pudieron llevar a cabo como parte del entrenamiento.
Y eso es todo por ahora, pero los engranajes ya están en marcha para nuestros próximos eventos en Miami. Estén atentos a noticias sobre ellos próximamente.
